Depth Meets Breadth
Academics
Interdisciplinary programs designed to connect knowledge, practice, research, and professional preparation.
A Different Kind of Education
Zaag University's academic philosophy is built around rigorous teaching, applied learning, interdisciplinary study, and meaningful connections between classroom knowledge and real-world practice. Programs are designed to help students develop strong foundations, practical skills, ethical judgment, research awareness, and the ability to work across fields.
Zaag's learning model emphasizes lectures, seminars, labs, simulation, studio-based learning, applied projects, case studies, field experiences, research opportunities, and collaborative problem-solving. The goal is to create learning environments where students can understand theory, apply knowledge, and develop the confidence to contribute in professional and community settings.
Our Approach
Four pillars that define the Zaag academic experience.
Hybrid & VR/MR Delivery
Zaag's default delivery model is hybrid — in-person sessions combined with structured online learning — designed so that neither mode is a lesser version of the other. Health and paramedic programmes extend this with VR/MR simulation, allowing students to rehearse clinical scenarios with fidelity that classroom or purely online environments cannot replicate. The B.EMS programme's simulation curriculum was developed with input from working paramedics and emergency physicians and reflects the actual case distribution of urban emergency response.
Programme Advisory Committees
Every programme at Zaag is governed by a Programme Advisory Committee that includes industry practitioners, community representatives, and Indigenous advisors who hold full voting rights — not advisory-only status. The composition of each PAC is a policy commitment, reviewed annually. TRC Calls to Action — including Call 92 in every business programme — are embedded in curriculum review criteria, ensuring that Indigenous perspectives shape programme content rather than appearing as supplementary acknowledgement.
Research-Integrated Teaching
All tenure-track faculty maintain active research programmes across Zaag's nine research centres, and current projects feed directly into course content. The four pillars ensure that students encounter research problems at the intersection of disciplines — an Emergency Medicine student contributes to work at the Emergency Medicine Research Centre; a technology student engages the AI & Applied Technology Institute. Graduate programmes launching in September 2027 will further embed research within credential pathways.
Building in Public Pedagogy
Zaag's Building in Public philosophy extends into the classroom. Students engage with real institutional challenges — programme development, regulatory processes, ecosystem design — as case material. This is not experiential learning in the abstract sense of simulated projects; it is genuine participation in an institution being built in real time. Early cohort students have contributed to curriculum feedback loops, platform beta testing, and PAC deliberations that shaped subsequent programme offerings.
Faculties & Schools
Eight distinct faculties, each offering programs designed for real-world readiness.
Faculty of Medicine & Allied Health Disciplines
Home to 18 programmes and the flagship Bachelor of Emergency Medicine (B.EMS) — Canada's first. The four-step paramedic pathway (EMR → PCP/AEMCA → ACP → B.EMS) defines the faculty's identity. VR/MR simulation is embedded throughout clinical and pre-clinical training. Additional programmes span Nursing, Emergency Medicine Science, and Health Administration.
Faculty of Engineering & Technology
Twelve programmes spanning Computer Science, Software Engineering, Biomedical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, and Electrical Engineering. The faculty integrates applied problem-solving with systems thinking, and partners with industry from the first year of study. Hybrid delivery with in-person lab requirements.
Faculty of Business Administration
Ten programmes — BBA, Entrepreneurship, Finance, Marketing, Hospitality & Tourism Management, and others — each with TRC Call to Action 92 embedded in the curriculum. Business programmes are available in hybrid and online-only formats, designed for both direct-entry and working professionals.
Faculty of Arts & Sciences
Eleven programmes including Environmental Sciences, Life Sciences, Mathematics, and Humanities. The faculty supports rigorous foundational inquiry across natural and human sciences. Humanities programmes offer an online-only pathway; sciences include in-person lab components. Hybrid delivery standard.
Faculty of Applied & Technical Skills
Five programmes in culinary arts, trades, and applied technical disciplines. In-person attendance is required — these programmes are built around hands-on skill development that cannot be replicated online. Industry practicum is a graduation requirement.
Faculty of Emerging Media & Design
Six programmes centred on VR/MR studio production, digital design, and emerging media. The faculty's VR/MR studio is a core instructional asset shared across programmes. Scheduled to launch September 2027, alongside the graduate cohort.
Interdisciplinary & Unique Programs
Eight programmes that sit across faculty lines — including the Bachelor of Interdisciplinary Health Studies (B.IHS), Bachelor of AI & Health (B.AIH), and Bachelor of Fine Arts in Virtual Reality (BFA.VR). These programmes carry no 'Faculty of' prefix because they are designed to resist disciplinary silos by structure.
Research Centres & Institutes
Nine research centres and nine associated graduate and research programmes. The research layer of Zaag's academic structure, where faculty and graduate students work on problems that span disciplines and feed directly back into programme design. No 'Faculty of' prefix — this is research infrastructure, not a faculty division.
"I enrolled before the formal approvals came through, which some people thought was a risk. But the curriculum was real, the faculty were serious, and the credential pathway was clear. By the time I finished, I had skills and a network that none of my peers at traditional institutions had at the same stage. The transparency about where the institution was in its regulatory journey was actually reassuring — I always knew exactly where things stood."
